Laser refers to lights, which is the industry of the future developed for medicine, military, communication. Laser stands for "Light Amplification by Stimulated Emission of Radiation".
Laser light has only one frequency and provides only one spectrum when it is passed through the spectrum prism. Characteristics of laser lights are: 1) It has only wave lenght, 2) It displays interfrence 3) It travels straight 4) It has high energy density.
Laser light is quite pure and travels straight to be radiated. Even though the light being radiated from flame or flourescent lamp emerges from the same atom or molecule, it is composed of many lights in different frequency. These lights passing through each atom or molecule are the combined lights without any similarity between each other. However, laser lights have only one frequency and continuous lights with regular phases.
Thedore Hardl Maiman introduced the first laser light made of the ruby crystal in 1960. The laser was primarily utilized for military and industrial purposes and started to be used in medical fields more frequently after continuous research and development. After optical retina photo-coagulation device using ruby laser instead of halogen lamp was developed, it was directed to the medical area as of 1964.
The use of laser for medical purposes had been restricted until early 1970s since laser oscillators and the relevant technology was slowly developing. Various medical laser products were developed with the carbondioxide laser device invented in 1971.
Medical laser products were produced in Korea towards the end of 1980s and the need has increased a lot since 1990. And the demand for lasers easy to be used and providing fast results has increased more.
Known light has a frequency range in a manner that its selective effectiveness is low according to a certain frequency and it is not suitable for treatment. Since lasers are monochromatic and have a regular wave front, they have a fine combination between two different lights and spot magnitude may be shrunk.
Laser with this feature allows contactless therapy. For this reason, they are less risky in terms of pains and have less infection danger. Additionally, lasers are useful to kill dangerous cells and microbes by heating the cell with quite concentrated energy.
Since laser is a monochromatic light, it can be absorbed in some certain components of tissues or in cells for photochemical reactions. For this reason, because it is able to treat certain tissue selectively without affecting other parts, it can be used for partial treatment in a bloodless way.
When an optical wave orienter is used such as the optical fiber, it is used for operations not only in the body but also in sensitive parts such as brain with microscope. As a result of the development of the laser technology, laser surgery are used in medical fields such as ophthalmology, dermatology, dentistry, internal diseases, obstetrics, gyneacology and orthopedics.
